Biography

naveed L. salek nejad aka Princex Naveed is an artist, writer and cultural mediator, holding an MA from Concordia University’s Individualized Program. Their artworks have been on display in Canada and internationally, most recently at Former Jewish Orphanage Pankow (Berlin, 2025), the MFA Sub Gallery (Montréal, 2024), the Treaty Space Gallery (Halifax, 2023), and at Heima Collective (Seyðisfjörður, 2023). Their non-fiction writing and poetry has appeared in books published in Germany (Querverlag) and the United States (Thick Press), online (Esse arts + opinions), and in self-published artist books. Born to a Polish mother and Irani father in Germany, they reside in Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal.

Artist Statement

Generally, I work across performance, installation, and audio-visual media, processing collective memories and everyday observations through fiction to penetrate reality. My practice is informed by my embodiment, family histories of migration, and mixed heritage. Focusing on the dichotomies of foreign/at home and included/excluded, I aim to consider my own role in caring for my communities. I begin my projects with an open-ended display in mind, working towards it as I go. While I adapt the content to the desired display, I always remain receptive to unexpected developments during the process, incorporating them into the final product. Often the ideas for my artworks come from terms and wordplays taken at face value. Close observation is another key element of my creative process, in terms of both concept and form. In a sense, I look closely at the mundane components of everyday life to reveal their broader meaning. Ultimately, I aim to create opaque and competing representations of the same phenomenon, thereby leaving room for the viewer’s imagination and questions.
